Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, But a comedy in long-shot."
Reflecting by Breathing
KO YEON SOO (art critic)
"Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, But a comedy in long-shot." This is one of the famous enriched and pithy quotes by Charles Chaplin, an actor and director who is loved across time periods by expressing the pain of time felt by sensitive points and warm perspective toward humanity through body, instead of language. Although the gestures that seem slightly lower than our common sense agreed across all times and countries of the world draw comfortable smiles, but the contents inside are not funny. Human beings, the small dots that are not easily visible through the huge waves of history created by humans, are such weak and great beings. The episodes of lines that are thin as threads setup a gigantic 3-dimensional space.
Lines, Peace, Balance, Indifference, and Zen
Bup kwan’s artworks seem to be fully soaked in a color that seems vivid and vague, and the colors that formed a background from the beginning seem to be clearly floating to the surface. They are artworks consisting of detailed dots and lines that are identifiable by looking at them as closely as possible, and are seen at a glance as a large color side by taking a step backward to put them together at a sight. The radius of physical and psychological time and space to properly observe the ‘artworks’ endlessly broadens and deepens because of dots and lines that are marked and drawn as the extensions of Artist Bup kwan’s act of practicing ascetism. The numerous artworks that are not small come into our eyes and permeate into our minds without any inconvenience or being unpleasant psychologically, because they are the process and traces of an artist’s act of putting the self-examination seen through the eyes of mind by brush tips. There seems to exist several errors if we are to simply classify such process and traces according to our visual artistic terms, such as an artist’s practice of the time and artistic acts of visual artists who visualize their artistic inspirations intuitively or strategically or the flow of large tendency as an art trend formed by them. Of course, there are visual artists such as Wolfang Laib who view the nature and human as one through nature-circulative artworks based on oriental thoughts, or Jackson Pollock who left only the process of an act and visualized it into a plane painting. They delivered mental healing to us very well through meditative comfort, and succeeded in fully pouring out the unconsciousness of humans that is hard to pull out into a canvas. According to their desire, and according to the role of art.
The endless lines and the sporadic dots in that width inside Bup kwan’s artworks are almost mixed by invisible Matière. While they are distanced from the act of very ordinary visual artists who try to create a canvas with their own formative language, and the part mentioned by the artists as continuously putting just dots at once without a sketch is an element that confirms this. Thus, the dots and lines that wriggle instead of being straight when looked at closely are peaceful and tranquil without frictions with each other, but they are blended in together by staying harmoniously without entangling or crumpling tensely. They are placed and overlapped neatly and tidily.
"I’d like to deliver to people the peace of mind gained by practicing ascetism. That is what artworks do.” Bup kwan’s seemingly indifferent confession makes us feel more comfort in his artworks. In fact, his works were also created not only in abstracts but also in a design of painting that liberally embraces the life of all living things. Artworks drawn comfortably and beautifully present amusement and joy to viewers, but from the artist’s stance, the artworks drawn with clear figures have changed the format as if capturing perspectives andmind again in that figure. The act of repeatedly drawing a shape so that perspective andmind are not captured and do not stay has rather resulted in dots and lines that escaped from the shape. The attitude of self-examination (to see clearly) delivered by the brush tip has no staying in a phenomenon, situation, and object. Artist Bubkwan’s tranquility to cultivate his mind and create and keep a clear mirror peacefully embrace us as an artwork.
The mind that does not even distinguish what does not exist, i.e., the indifference of balance without bias permeates into lines and comes out by Zen.The balance in Bup kwan’s works means likeminded, not middle way as moderation. Being likeminded with each other and circumambulating are the most optimal center of a point that changes every time, not the exact center, and such balance must always move. Since the time and space that put dots and lines change all the time, they are the optimum trace of that moment. In this sense, balance is not a sense but the realization of logic to Artist Bubkwan. Thus, his dots and lines cannot be right or formal when looked at closely but are right and peaceful when seen from faraway. The thousands and tens of thousands of non-calculative acts are drawn by the sense of logic from his ignorance, freedom from all ideas and thoughts, and indifference. Balance creates and overcomes the weight of an object, not its center. Bup kwan’s act that has become one with his work permeate into us by holding energy with free and the best peace and breath. Seeing all things and objects but not bringing them into my mind, cultivating my mind and looking at myself, pursuing truth, and the mind of respecting all living things and immersing into the restoration of human dignity are reflected on artworks and take a form that seems to be revealed but is not.
"Like a lion not trembling at noises, like the wind not caught in a net,
like a lotus not stained by water, let one wander alone like a rhinoceros."
-<Sutta Nipata> Translated by Ji-hyun Seok -
Bup kwan’s 'breath of indifference’ goes back toZen. All viewpoints are returned to him, and the act of tapping himself by brush tip returns to the artist as lines by projecting on him. We see Bup kwan’s breath of indifference.
Comment: Writer’s Confession and Desire
In an abstract painting that requires intuition by crushing familiar specific shape, we face an artwork with nervousness regardless of how light or heavy it is. Abstract paintings must be viewed by building sensitive insights and preparing some swaying sensitivity, which is burdensome but must be brought, along with a detailed, primitive, and instinctive visual discernment ability. How such abstract paintings showed off their breathtaking figures with high-dignity and class will presented in front of us with the solid background of art. Thus, identifying good work and good artworks is not an easy job for anyone. As a result, we are eager to have a reliable expert’s pointing out with fingers full of certainty amidst the flood of artworks that have incorporated dots, lines, and surfaces differently. This is because at least they create an open-wide space that we can nod our heads in front of splendid artworks as they are pointed at more clearly and strongly inside a stuffy white cube. Rather than this is a problem, no one will be able to perfectly escape from such charge once he or she enters the visual art field in this unendurable, embarrassing situation. Nevertheless, the creator is quietly placed in the center of confusion like the eye of a typhoon. Regardless of creativity and the masterly technical skills of handling media, some artworks have loosened by easing mind little by little, serious attitude toward art, and a perfect sense of responsibility on one’s work in a dignified abstract format. It would be difficult to completely deny that these artworks are as wealthy as good artworks.
Towards the lines permeated by good breath of practicing ascetism of cultivating mind, like a clear mirror by continuously reflecting oneself, and Artist Bubkwan’s artworks which have lines and dots overlap and come out as a good, indifferent texture, I decided to point my finger at them carefully but boldly. Towards Artist Bubkwan’s indifferent artworks that are not inattention or irresponsibility.
If my confession has a concern over whether my finger pointing at the moon is ignorantly and uncouthly hiding the moon, and if I have a desire, then I hope that such indifferent moon, when it warmly covers on the water surface, is the sign of buoy quietly and casually floating in waves that react to the light by shining.
