나의 작업에 영감을 주는 ‘느슨한 생각들’

작업에 대한 고민은 종종 다른 생각들의 충돌에서 시작된다. 어쩌면 그것은 형태, 색감, 현상에 기반을 둔 주변과의 관계, 역사적인 행적일 수 있고 그것은 아주 상세하고 구체적이거나 아니면 모호하거나 추상적인 생각들일지도 모른다.

성스럽고/세속적이고, 현대적이고/중세적이고, 호화롭고/가난하고, 유행에 무관/유행에 예민, 부드럽거나/강렬하거나…., 어쩌면 길게 느껴지는 이 목록들은 언제나 나의 작업을 요약하고 생각하게 하는 시작점이다. 그것은 서구 문명의 실패에 대한 강한 연민에서 또는 도덕적이고 구조적인 단절감에서 출발하기도 한다.

아름다웠던 폴란드는 2차대전과 공산주의 시기를 보내며 어려운 시간을 경험했다. 부유한 이탈리아서 보냈던 여름의 경험은 폴란드에서 느끼는 빈곤감과 대비되는 경계를 넘어선 예술적 감흥을 느끼게 했다. 시민으로의 삶은 빡빡하지만, 동시대를 입증하는 존재로써의 작가의 삶은 매혹적이다. 나의 예술적 사고를 교차하게 만들었다. 이러한 이분법적인 환경이 나를 매료시킨다. 나의 작업은 시각언어에 관한, 그리고 상이한 개념의 틈을 좁히는 것에 관한 것들이다.

건축가로서 받은 교육은 나의 작업에서 원근감을 만들어 준다. 미국의 여성 잡지 Cosmopolitan 에서 삽화가로 일한 경험은 작품의 소재 선택에 많은 영향을 준다. 건축가의 예술에 대한 구체적 지식, 잡지 삽화가의 상업적 배경은 나의 생각을 훨씬 쉽게 표현하게 한다.

나의 작업 일부에는 특정 도시의 기하학적 감각이 나타난다. 중세 토스카나 교회 또는 예배당에서 자주 볼 수 있는 줄무늬들이다. 단테, 사보나롤라와 같은 특정 인물들의 등장은 나의 존재가 현재 보다는 먼 과거에 있음을 의미한다.

 

‘Some Loose Thoughts’ Inspiring My Work

Contemplation of my work often starts with a collision between different thoughts. It could be historical records or relations with surroundings based on shape, color and phenomenon. Or, it might be very delicate, specific, obscure or abstract thoughts.

Sacred/secular, contemporary/medieval, luxurious/poor, pastel/sensitive to trend, smooth/intense… Maybe, listing these items is the starting point to organize and summarize my thoughts. It can also be the start from intense comparison against the failure of Western civilization or from the mortal and structural feeling of isolation.
 
The scenic Polish People’s Republic underwent hard times through the experience of the Second World War and Communism. The summer experience at rich Italy made me discover artistic inspiration which went beyond a border with poverty that I felt in Poland. As a citizen, life is not easy, but an author’s life as a creature to prove contemporaries is fantastic, which made my artistic thoughts crossed. This kind of dichotomic environment fascinates me. My work is about visual language, narrowing down a gap between different concepts.

The education I took as an architect forms perspective in my work. The experience I worked at the women’s magazine ‘Cosmopolitan’ as an illustrator is very helpful in selecting materials for my work. An architect’s specific knowledge on art and commercial background as a magazine illustrator make me express my thoughts far more easily.

A part of my work represents the geometric senses of a certain city. The stripes are commonly found in medieval churches or chapels in Tuscany. The emergence of certain figures such as Dante Alighieri and Girolamo Savonarola means that I exist far in the past, not in the present.
